Former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tom Homan issued a pointed warning Thursday that leaders of sanctuary cities—jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement—may soon face legal consequences. Speaking in response to a reporter’s question about arresting officials who shield illegal aliens from deportation, Homan replied bluntly, “Wait until you see what’s coming!”
Homan, appointed by former President Donald Trump as a top immigration adviser, has long criticized sanctuary jurisdictions for hindering federal immigration enforcement and putting public safety at risk. During his time with the Trump administration, he vowed to “bring hell” to sanctuary cities through ICE raids, federal lawsuits, and the withdrawal of federal funding from local governments that fail to comply with U.S. immigration laws.
The recent remarks came amid growing tensions over immigration enforcement as the Trump administration ramps up legal action. In one case, the federal government sued the city of Rochester over its sanctuary policies. In another, Trump announced a cutoff of federal funding to jurisdictions that shelter illegal immigrants.
On Fox News Thursday, Homan also criticized Democratic officials for defending Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an MS-13 gang member and domestic abuser from El Salvador who was deported after being convicted in the United States. Homan called out elected leaders for prioritizing political agendas over public safety, citing Garcia’s case as a warning against lenient immigration practices.
Homan’s comments follow recent high-profile incidents involving elected officials accused of aiding illegal immigrants. Last month, a Democrat county judge in Wisconsin was arrested for allegedly helping an undocumented individual evade ICE following a court hearing. A second Democrat judge in New Mexico also came under investigation for reportedly sheltering an illegal alien at his residence.
As the Trump administration continues its push for stricter immigration enforcement, Homan’s remarks signal a potential shift toward criminal prosecution of local officials who actively obstruct federal deportation efforts. The legal strategy, still unfolding, could escalate tensions between the federal government and sanctuary jurisdictions across the country.
